I’m in counseling, therefore I must be crazy, right? WRONG!

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard this statement when clients come into my office for help. The mere thought of going to a Therapist is deeply stigmatized in our society, to the point that many good people would rather suffer with mental health concerns and disorders to avoid peer preconceptions or being shamed and shunned for seeking professional help.

So how do we stop the labels? How do we crush the stigmas that prevents others from reaching out for help? By watching what we say and sanitizing our personal bias or opinion about counseling we share with others. Telling someone they are “crazy”, “psycho” or “insane” in asking for help with anxiety, depression or even possible suicide does not help, it hurts. So let’s decide today to take a stand against mental health labels and stigmas. Let's make a difference in changing this harmful societal misconception, that if you are in counseling you must be crazy!
